As a Volenteer

As part of NT LIFE’s commitment to people’s recovery and wellbeing, we aim to encourage and develop our students to volunteer in the growing programme we offer. In 2023 we partnered with Northumbria and Sunderland Universities by providing placements for Occupational Therapy and Teaching students, who volunteered with us. Julie and Jess, part of our current staff team, were both volunteers prior to their employment. Proving there are many benefits to volunteering including but not exclusive to:

  • Gain confidence
  • Make a difference
  • Meet new people
  • Make new friends
  • Be part of a community
  • Learn new skills
  • Take on a challenge
  • Find a purpose
  • Have FUN!

NT LIFE is developing a number of opportunities to help people: increase their knowledge, skills and experience, helping them to achieve their goals. Volunteer roles are flexible and include a variety of experiences:

  • Administrative
  • Peer support
  • Facilitator and Co-Facilitator roles
  • Course Development
  • Practical contribution e.g. making stuff to share within our wider community

Training, support and agreed expenses are available. Please note, some roles will require DBS checks.

If you're struggling, here you are not alone. Amazing staff, and sessions that provide tools to help shape a positive future. Sign up to your choice of courses, which run for a term. My personal favourite and saviour is whittling, on which I now volunteer to help out with sessions. Woodland Wellbeing also attracted me to NT Life, a great way to connect with nature to sooth your soul.

I have been accessing NT LIFE for the past year and would highly recommend it to anyone struggling with their mental health. The ethos of the college focuses on the value of lived experience and importance of community. Everyone working or volunteering there has their own personal experience of mental health difficulties, which they use to provide authentic support to students. The courses offered cover a wide range of topics. Some are directly linked to mental health difficulties to provide coping strategies and psychoeducation. Others are activity based, offering an outlet of expression to aid wellbeing. All courses foster a supportive environment of acceptance and encouragement. While the recovery college is not a replacement for therapy or formal treatment, it is an invaluable service to those stuck on long NHS waiting lists (which, let's face it, most people are). NT LIFE is also a beneficial adjunct to therapy for a lot of students. It's helpful to engage with the courses before starting therapy, to become comfortable talking about your difficulties. During and post-therapy, the college offers somethings unique - a friendly environment in which struggles, identity and wellbeing can be explored without judgement or pressure. In a system flawed by financial cuts and resource deficits, NT LIFE is an effective way to help people. I know that it is a lifeline for many.

N.T. Life is an amazing group of incredibly caring, supportive and proactive facilitators, who work tirelessly to help anyone who is in need of guidance and support in times of mental health and emotional instability. I have been incredibly privileged, to both watch and also recieve their amazing kindness, support and the inclusion into a new family. The work they do is so vital and the calm and inclusive manner, in which they provide courses, the content covered within each course and the incredible bonding of the participants is breath taking. I have been fortunate to attend several different courses and found all beneficial. I have. found a passion for crafting and writing, which i have continued doing both in my own time and find great comfort from. Hand on heart they have hugely impacted my ongoing recovery and have given me time and space to run at my own pace. They are truly amazing and make such a positive impact within our community. A fantastic team, fantastic team building and a genuine positivity you can see and feel. Wishing them every success going forward and the praise they undoubtedly deserve. Miss V Curtis

A great and friendly place. that has been of great help to me. If you are unsure you can go at your own pace. It’s wonderful and hopeful to see others improve. I delayed six months to sign up and that was the stupidest thing i did because it was 6 months I could have been recovering. Everyone there will know how nervous you are going because nearly everyone who attends was nervous the first time they went so the staff and other attendees will all look out for you
